Capturing the attention of a

conscious consumer

Last year, it came as no surprise that the Global Wellness Institute announced that wellbeing is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. And everyone is taking note. One of the key booming markets is wellbeing tourism. Holistically-minded destination retreats that go way beyond the physical are on the up, and are encompassing elements such as detox and diet; stress and sleep recovery; and other programmes aimed at helping people achieve more emotional balance in their lives.

This new wellbeing is about reconnecting our mind with our body – and incorporating this ethos way beyond any traditional spa menu. With more of us looking for ways to boost self-confidence or learn how to manage stress, it’s little wonder that mind and emotional healing holidays are a rising trend. And with a growing understanding that a healthy mind leads to a healthy life, retreats offering coaching in mindfulness, meditation and yoga, are helping sufferers of modern-living burnout to reconnect their mind, body and soul. Here are some of our current favourites we’re working with that are breaking the mould, yet not so niche that they can easily be offered as prizes.

Kamalaya, Thailand – Embracing Change

The award-winning Kamalaya, located on Koh Samui, is one of the most genuine and authentic holistic spa retreats in Thailand with high levels of care and comfort. With a truly extensive and complementary approach you understand why 'Wellness Sanctuary' is the perfect description for this place. Most guests take part in a wellbeing programme, be it to detox, de-stress or lose weight and Kamalaya also has its own sleep enhancement programme. It's not all serious though – luxurious (but always holistic) treatments are available too.

There’s a state-of-the-art fitness centre for optimal training and a 25m ozone-treated pool (minimal chlorine) at the highest point of the resort to take in stunning panoramic views over the Gulf of Thailand.

Shreyas Retreat, India

A secluded sanctuary an hour north of Bangalore, Shreyas Retreat is the place to go for a total reboot. Cigarettes and alcohol are abandoned at the gates, and herbivores will find a haven in the vegetarian cuisine – though we’re guessing even the most prolific protein fans won’t find fault with the food. Canopied cottages, yoga pavilions and meditation huts dot the gorgeous grounds, as do fragrant frangipani trees and bursts of bougainvillea. Utilising the power of silence as a tool for improving your emotional health; outside of meditation sessions, you can choose how silent you want the rest of your stay to be. Focus on flickering flames during candle meditation and combine rejuvenating massages with outdoor yoga classes, strengthening your physical health and supporting your emotional transformation.

SHA wellness, Spain

Meanwhile, at SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain medical services (everything from genetic testing to osteopathy) are balanced out with therapies such as shiatsu, reflexology and lymphatic drainage. These days, more and more of us are aware that while having a massage may get rid of knotty shoulders or soothe aching muscles, it’s just one small part of wellbeing. It’s no longer enough to escape the demands of life; many people are looking for something deeper, something more meaningful and are becoming much more aware of the need to invest in ourselves and a healthier lifestyle.

Kurotel Brain Booster

Escape to the idyllic Gramado Mountains of Brazil on a healing holiday that will boost brainpower, attention span and memory. Developed by neuroscientists, this wellness programme includes consultations with psychologists and psychotherapists to achieve greater mental and emotional health. A leading retreat for a transformative stress management holiday, you’ll get the chance to make the most of the Stress Control Centre with relaxing audio and visual stimuli at your disposal to help reduce anxiety and promote tranquillity. Together with advanced creative coaching sessions to exercise your brain and optimise performance, you’ll undoubtedly unwind with the option of soothing underwater massages to improve your sleep patterns.

Winner feedback from this campaign

"I can't even begin to explain what an amazing time I had at Skyros, in fact I would even describe it as life-changing for me. I've never done yoga before, but Ken, the teacher, was absolutely incredible. I've been working so hard as a clinical technician in London and have forgotten myself and what I am about. I used to be an Irish dancer. This experience has changed the way I think about my life, it's been incredible, thank you so much to Naked." Madaleina
